Table Tennis in China: A National Past Time

This Robo-Pong newsletter includes observations by Larry Thoman, General Manager of Newgy Industries, who recently spent two weeks in China attending the World Table Tennis Championships in Shanghai, visiting Newgy Industries' Robo-Pong factory, and seeing some of China's magnificent sights.

And see below: a new Robo-Pong contest to win FREE paddles!

The 2005 World Table Tennis Championships--Shanghai, China

"The World Championships were outstanding-- although China dominated the matches so thoroughly- -that some of the usual competitive excitement that occurs when one country plays another was missing in all the finals. China won all five titles: Men's Singles ( Wang Liqin), Women's Singles (Zhang Yining), Men's Doubles (Kong Linghui/Wang Hao), Women's Doubles (Wang Nan/Zhang Yining) and Mixed Doubles (Wang Liqin/Guo Yue). Other top ten countries included Korea, Austria, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Hong Kong, Sweden, Russia, France & Denmark."

"Some of the other matches were quite memorable. A young man from Denmark (Michael Maze) made it to the semi-finals by beating two Chinese team members in a row. The last one from down 0-3 in games and 10-7 in the fourth game! Also USA's Gao Jun advanced to the last 8 in the Women's Singles- an exceptional result for the United States."

The Popularity of Table Tennis in China

"Here's an amusing story about how popular table tennis is in China. The first night we arrived, we decided to go to a popular shopping district called Nanjing Road. My wife found a neat little pearl shop that also had a beauty shop in back. While my wife looked at the pearls, I checked out the salon. It was slow for them (only one customer), so the rest of the employees were sitting around watching TV. And guess what was on? The table tennis matches, of course. I doubt I would ever see such a scene in the U.S.."

"China's #2 ranked female player (Wang Nan) was in a tough match with Hyun Jung Moon of Korea and (although I couldn't understand what the people in the salon were saying) it was pretty apparent that they were as into the table tennis match as football fans are into their sport here in the US. They cheered and clapped when Wang Nan won a point-- and groaned when she lost one. Clearly they were concerned as the end neared and she was unable to sustain a comeback and they showed disappointment when she lost. And obviously the Chinese love the sport--not only as players, but also as fans. The matches were on Chinese TV practically 24/7."

    A Few Glimpses of China

"See the photo (to the left) that shows the huge, raucous crowds--with their "clackers" and "cheerleader"--that were watching the matches everyday."

"China was many things--mostly good, some eye opening, and a few things not so good. Overall, though, it was a great trip. Our factory is first-class. It's clean, organized, efficient, and well-staffed. They have taken several steps to assure a quality product. And they also have a surprising level of security-a gate, 24/7 guards, restricted access to certain manufacturing/testing areas, and other more secretive security measures. Apparently, this level of security is fairly commonplace in China (I guess due to trade secret spying and illegal copying). So we feel very good that our factory will continue to provide high quality products for our customers."

"On the negative side, the Chinese allowed smoking in the halls and bathrooms of the table tennis playing hall, and I ended up getting a respiratory infection. Plus it also didn't help that the air in all of China's major cities is very smoggy."

"After the World Championships ended, my wife and I had 6 days of touring in Xian and Beijing where we saw many historical sites such as the Terracotta Soldiers, the Great Wall, Forbidden City, the Ming tombs, several gorgeous Buddhist temples, beautiful parks, and a few theatrical productions. We were on the run from morning to night. We also visited several factories where we saw how they make silk rugs and scarves, cut and shape jade, form and bake terracotta, create cloisonné vases, jars, and statues, paint using only the hand, and how they grow and grade freshwater pearls and make them into jewelry. We also did a Rickshaw tour of an historic village in Beijing and visited a kindergarten and a local family there. It was exhausting but all and all a great time, and we hope you'll get a chance to visit China one day if you haven't already."
